Where old radios are cool...and the coolest radios are really old.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Why do you collect radios? What started this site?
Mostly because I wanted people to remember the way some things were. Radio was a big part of American life, especially during the war when people needed to know what was going on with their sons and daughters in the military. Entertainment too was a much welcomed diversion during wartime. What amazes me is the way the radio became smaller and more portable. It went from Tube Radio consoles, to Tube Table Top radios, and finally to the transistor Shirt Pocket radio which most of this site is all about.

Do all of your radios work?

All the radios work except for maybe 6 of them. I bought them mostly for display purposes, and whenever I had the time, I repaired those that were received needing such repairs.
=================================================

Where can I find radios like this to purchase?

I purchased most of mine on eBay, but that has gotten expensive. People are realizing the value of these radios, and hence the high prices. Also, you've got to pay the shipping and handling fees on eBay. Some radios were found at tagsales, and others were donated by family and friends.

Vic, I enjoyed your photos very much and I have a question and comment...First the comment, I too have one of the round radios that hang from the attached chain, mine is lime green and still works.  The question, do you know how to open the photo cube (the photo part) radio, GE P2755A? Thank you, Tami

Hi,
Thanks for visiting my site.
Check the earphone jack, a lot of times the speaker contacts of the earplug jack are not touching each other. To actually check the speaker itself, use a 1- 1/2 volt battery and place the leads onto the speaker terminals. If the speaker is ok, you will hear an audible 'click' each time you touch the speaker terminals. If not, replace the speaker.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Thanks for visiting my site again.
Check the earphone jack,... a lot of times the speaker contacts of the earphone jack are not touching each other. Inserting the earphone plug sometimes damages these spring loaded contacts and seperates them. To actually check the speaker itself, use a 1- 1/2 volt battery and place the leads onto the speaker terminals. If the speaker is ok, you will hear an audible 'click' each time you touch the speaker terminals. If not, replace the speaker.
Hope this helps.

Why did I build this website?

Hi Tami,
I took a look at the photo cube and what you need to do is rotate the black ring around the top (Speaker Grill) counter Clockwise to release the clear cube from the actual radio chassis. Please let me know how you make out.

Dear Sir, I have one of these radios still in the original box and it still plays and looks new, could you tell me what year it was made and the value of it.thanks in advance.
Ervin Bowers

It's a National (Panasonic) R-8 and the value should be checked under Completed Listings in eBay. The best, current pricing is shown there. Regards, Vic.

If you can sell me one or more pieces of this please give me total cost plus shipping and transaction details. If you accept PAYPAL is better.
Thank you very much

hello my name is mike and while cleaning out a closet i found two mitsubishi 6x-870
transistor radios on black and one redish brown both with ear phones and leather cases
one strap is broke and one has a ear piece pouch on the strap they both work i seen
on another site that one guy found one on ebay for 9.99 and thought that was a steal
i would like to know if you would tell me what the price range is if you know they are in good condition with a few rub marks on them i was just listening to the northwestern basketball game on them i remember my grandmother giving them to me years ago any info would be helpfull     thanks    mike

Hi Mike,
Sounds like you're talking about the Mitsubishi "Elite", model
6X-870. If that's correct, and taking into consideration the
condition of the radio, than $9.99 WAS A STEAL. If you have a
clean version, with NO CHIPS, CRACKS, DENTS, DINGS etc., and if
they function with GOOD VOLUME, I would say each one is worth at
least $50 or better. Worn paint on the speaker grills is the
main problem with most of these Elites. Also, hairline cracks
are very common detractors from the value. If you search E-Bay
on a regular basis, you can see what the current market will
bear, it's very hard to put a price on a radio sight unseen.
Some months bring higher/lower prices that fluctuate greatly. If
you are NOT TOO GREEDY, you can probably sell them each for $50
if in good to very good condition. Email me back if you are
going to sell or auction them, along with GOOD pictures, and
maybe I myself will bid, even though I already have one.
 Hope this helps.
 Regards,
 Vic

HI there, I stumbled upon your site when researching the Realistic Lunavox radio. I have a chance to buy one and I was wondering the fair market value. Is it rare?
Thanks
Mark

Vic, thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate your help. You have a great site with some beautiful radios. Nice job!The lunavox is a pretty cool one for a Realistic. I thought I saw a non-ebay auction site get around $60, but I could be wrong. I guess I'll try to get it for around $25 and see what happens. Thanks again.

Hello,
If available, how much are you asking for a rocket crystal radio?
thanks, Len

Hi Len,
Thanks for visiting. Sorry, but individual radios are not for sale. I would only consider selling the entire collection. Thanks again for visiting my site though.
Regards,
Vic

i have a channel master am radio model 6505 5 trasistor.how would i find out what its worth. larry

Hi Larry,
Thanks for visiting. I think the best way to find CURRENT value of most radios is to check out 'Completed Listings' on eBay. So called Value Books are extremely out of date with the current market. I just checked eBay and actually couldn't find any recently sold or any that are currently for sale. You have the option to put it on eBay with a low start bid and a very high reserve. That way you maybe can judge how high the bidding goes before it peaks, and then do a re-list. Hope this helps.

Hello I've recently caught "transistor radio fever" and have a

Hi,
Thanks for dropping by. That Americana 620 is a very inexpensive radio, not highly collected, and sells regularly on eBay for $5 to $10. Please remember though that this is a hobby, and 'art' is in the eye of the beholder! You can put whatever you want in your collection. Some radios are so rare and high priced that I don't even bother with them.
Happy Collecting!
